Highway Stone in Warneford Lane, Oxford, Oxfordshire
This stone has the inscription 'HERE ENDETH OXFORD MILE HY WAY 1667'. This stone marked a distance of one mile from Oxford's city gate. This was because the Turnpike Acts meant that the city was responsible for repairing and maintaining the roads within this distance. After passing this stone the condition of the road was no longer the city's responsibility. Until 1771 this road was the main route from Oxford to London.
