Former Infant Orphan Asylum, Wanstead, Greater London
This building was originally built as the Infant Orphan Asylum in 1841-3. It was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and George Moffatt in an Elizabethan style. The orphan asylum had originally been founded by Dr Andrew Reed in 1827. The range of buildings was built from limestone ashlar with mullion windows and turrets with ogee domes. The layout is U-shaped. The centre block has a projecting gatehouse that is 3 storeys high. The round arched entrance has an inscription "A structure of hope built on the foundation of faith by the hand of charity". The building has since been used a the Crown Court and as Royal Wanstead School.
