The Stray Walls, Castle Howard

The Stray Walls, Castle Howard, York, North Yorkshire YO60 7DA

The Stray Walls at Castle Howard consist of bastion walls with interval towers running east to west for approximately 1 mile, and lie immediately south of the Pyramid Gate. They were designed in around 1723 by Vanbrugh as part of the spectacular southern approach to Castle Howard, which was itself designed by Vanbrugh in the early 18th century and is situated in 1,000 acres of landscaped grounds.

Opening Arrangements

The Stray Walls lie outside the Castle Howard paid visitor area and can be viewed free of charge at any reasonable time. The western section is best viewed from the permissive path to its south, and the eastern section from the public footpath running from the Avenue. The Stray Walls are also included in specialist tours of the landscape monuments when closer access is available. The opening arrangements are displayed on the website.
