Visit Grant-Aided Places

We provide grants to help conserve historic places throughout England. These include listed buildings, scheduled monuments and designed landscapes. Many grant-aided places open to the public as a condition of their grant.

The extent of public access varies from one property to another. Some are open throughout the year, some on certain days only, and others provide public access only by prior arrangement. In some cases, access may be limited to certain parts of the building or site.

We are open for services every Sunday and on special occasions (Easter; weddings; funerals; concerts; fundraising events). We are also open from the beginning of May through to the end of September on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 12 noon to 16.00. We also offer individual and group visits by special arrangement. We organise concerts and events, sometimes in co-operation with our Friends of the Ipswich Unitarian Meeting House group (such as a Dickens reading event in December) and charity fundraisers. We have recently developed connections with the University of Suffolk. The MA History students will come for part of their course as a live source research project and will write a podcast about the Meeting House as part of their coursework.

The grant funding related to this return was related to improvements to the landscape only. The opening arrangements for 2024 are for the grounds and wider park to be open access and free for all visitors 24 hours per day, every day of the year. We are expecting improvement works to the landscape and the house commencing in 2024 which may limit access to certain areas. These works will enhance our accessibility within the grounds joining up paths and making the main paths within the original landscaped gardens to be wheelchair accessible.

The smelt mill structure is available to be viewed from the bottom of the embankment by the public during the opening hours of the business units which share the site. This is generally 8am to 5pm weekdays and 8am to 1pm Saturday. Access onto the consolidated structure (the embankment) itself can be arranged by appointment. There is an interpretation panel in the car park.
