Harwich Treadwheel Crane

Harwich Treadwheel Crane, Harwich, Essex CO12 3NH

The Treadwheel Crane is a two-storey, timber-framed, roofed structure housing two treadwheels that operated a timber crane. It is believed to be unique as the earliest surviving example of this type of structure in England. Dating from the late 18th century, it relocated in 1932 following the Government’s sale of the Naval Dockyards to a private concern. It is now the sole surviving visible building from the historic naval dockyards in Harwich.
