Yarmouth, Isle of Wight

Triangular in shape and bounded by the Solent to the north, the River Yar to west and Thorley Brook and marshes to the south and east, Yarmouth has a population today of around 1000. Occupation of the site dates back to Roman times, and the settlement was mentioned in Domesday book as 'Ermud'. The strategic coastal position of Yarmouth has helped to shape its history in a quite unusual manner. The thin strip of land in the foreground was breached in 1662 making Yarmouth, briefly, an Island.
