WIindsor Castle, Windsor, Windsor and Maidenhead

Men and horse-drawn carriages on the street by the west walls of Windsor Castle. The carriages would have been available for hire like a taxi and show that tourists were already visiting Windsor. The small Information booth on the right was also, presumably, for tourists. William the Conqueror began building a castle at Windsor around 1070 and it was completed in 1086. It was originally a defensive castle but soon became a royal residence. By 1110, Henry I already had living rooms within the Castle. His grandson, Henry II, converted the Castle into a palace.
