Tomb of Jane Mary Clouston, Lewisham, Greater London
The tomb of Jane Mary Clouston is in Brockley Cemetery. It dates back to around 1871 and was designed by J. Lord, mason of Deptford. The money for the tomb was raised by a public subscription. It is in the shape of a Portland stone figure of a semi-kneeling infant at prayer and looking heavenwards and is an example of Victorian sentimentality. Jane was a motherless girl who was murdered in Kidbrooke Lane Eltham on the night of Tuesday 25th of Apri1 1871. She was taken to Guy's Hospital where she died on Sunday Apri1 30th 1871. She was 17 years old. According to the inscription 'She was agreeable in manner, amiable and affectionate in disposition. Her last words were: "Oh! Let me Die." '
