Tithe Barn, Barton Farm, Pound Lane, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire

Although called a tithe barn this building was actually part of a grange. The owner of the Bradford on Avon grange was Shaftesbury Abbey which was the richest nunnery in England. The produce of the surrounding estate was brought across the nearby packhorse bridge to be stored in the great barn before being sold or used by the nuns themselves. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and the domestic buildings of the grange became a farm. The barn remained in use until 1974. It is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
