The Wardenry, Farley, Wiltshire
This building was built as almshouses and a wardenry (with schoolroom), in 1688-90 by Alexander Fort, for Sir Stephen Fox who was Paymaster to the forces of James II, Charles II and Queen Anne. He was also a benefactor and collaborator of Sir Christopher Wren at Chelsea Hospital. The building has a symmetrical central block 2 storeys high, an attic comprising warden's accommodation with some communal rooms, and 2 wings. Each wing has 6 dwellings for poor aged persons, men to east, women to west. The total cost was £1835.8s.8d.
