The Village Pump, Godolphin Cross, Breage, Cornwall
This village pump dates from the mid 19th century. Water was brought to the pump in a channel and collected in a tank. The pump was worked by a handle. The wall has a spout where the water came out and a niche where people could rest their bucket. There is another niche higher up in the end of the wall where the iron pump handle formerly fitted. Before mains water was piped into villages all water had to be collected by hand from pumps.
