The Swing Bridge, Custom House Quay, Hayle, Cornwall
This swing bridge was built to carry the railway and road across the canal. It was built in 1880 along with the engine house that held the machinery to move the bridge aside when boats needed to go up the canal. Hayle was one of Cornwall's main industrial ports, serving surrounding mines and becoming home to the Cornish Copper Company. The canal was built to bring boats right up to this factory. Hayle also had two of Cornwall’s three largest iron foundries.
