The Nine Stones, Winterbourne Abbas, Dorset
The Nine Stones is either a late Neolithic or an early Bronze Age stone circle. It is just outside of the village of Winterbourne Abbas, within Nine Stone Wood. The stones have been arranged in a rough circle with maximum internal diameter of 8 metres. The circle was first recorded in the 18th century by J. Aubrey, W. Stukeley and W. Hutchins. The Nine Stones are spaced about 1 metres apart. However there is a gap of 3 metres on the northern side, which is a possible entrance. W. Stukeley's 1723 drawing of the circle shows that it looks the same today as it did then. The site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Find out more.
