The Granada Cinema, Hoe Street, Walthamstow, Greater London
This cinema was constructed in 1929-30 for Sidney Bernstein as the Granada Cinema. The architect was Cecil Masey with the interiors designed by Theodore Komisarjevsky. It is an important example of the large and elaborate cinemas built by Sidney Bernstein between 1930 and 1939. Most were in working class districts where cinemas were a popular form of entertainment offering an escape from daily life. The exterior is largely original, while internally, most of the 1930 appearance survives. It is one of very few buildings in Britain that were designed in a Moorish style. It still had its Christie organ when the building was listed and was the oldest surviving example of a cinema designed by Komisarjevsky in London.
