The Gate Tower, Carlisle Castle, Carlisle, Cumbria

The castle was founded by William Rufus in 1092. More buildings were added during the 12th century. The keep was probably built between 1136 and 1153. The photograph shows De Irebys Tower which is the Gate Tower and part of the curtain walls. This tower was built in 1378-83 by John Lewyn. The curtain walls, with their interval towers, date from the 12th century. They have been partly rebuilt and cut through at various times. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
