Statue of Henry Schneider, Duke Street, Barrow in Furness, Cumbria

This statue of Henry Schneider was put up in 1891. The sculptor was Percy Wood. The inscription reads: 'IN HONOR/ OF HENRY WILLIAM SCHNEIDER/ MAYOR OF THIS BOROUGH/ 1875 TO 1878/ ERECTED/ BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ 1891'. Schneider, Hannay and Company built the first blast furnaces in Barrow between 1857-59. In 1866 they amalgamated with James Ramsden's company to form the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company. By 1876 it was the biggest iron and steel plant in the world.
