Stanley Technical High School, South Norwood Hill, Croydon, Greater London

This building was originally a technical trade school, public halls and art gallery. The main hall and gallery opened in 1901-03, a second hall in 1904, the trade school in 1907 and the secretary's house was completed in 1909. It was built by W F Stanley. He was an inventor, manufacturer of precision instruments and philanthropist. The trade school was based on the German 'Gewerbeschulen' - industrial or trade schools. The group of buildings are an exceptional example of the work of a local benefactor. The Trade School was the first in this country and still operates.
