St Michael's Mount, Cornwall
St Michael's Mount lies about 500 yards offshore. It rises almost 230 feet from sea level to the tower, chapel and battlement of the castle. It has been an island at high tide since a great flood in 3000 BC. It has to be reached by small ferry boats which run between Marazion and the mount's harbour. In the Middle Ages the Mount became a major pilgrimage destination. Four miracles are said to have happened here between 1262 and 1263. The Mount is now in the care of the National Trust.
