Sir Horace Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London

This is a photograph of Sir Horace Darwin (1851-1928) from Down House. Horace was Charles Darwin’s fifth son and the youngest of his children to survive into adulthood. He was born at Down House in 1851. He went to Cambridge University and became a civil engineer. He went on to set up his own company, the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, in 1885 and was Mayor of Cambridge between 1896 and 1897. He married and had a son and two daughters. His son was killed during World War One at the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, aged 33.
