Sir Francis Godolphin, Star Castle, The Garrison, St Marys, Isles of Scilly

Reconstruction drawing of Sir Francis Godolphin a Cornish gentleman in c.1600. He was responsible for building a defensive system on the Isles of Scilly, to counter the threat posed by the Spanish after the Armada of 1588. The most important of these defences was Star Castle, built in 1593. He was Governor of the Isles of Scilly from 1568–1608. He was also a Member of Parliament for Cornwall in 1588-9 and Lostwithiel in 1593.
