Round Tower, Edgehill, Warwickshire
The Round Tower, also known as Edgehill Tower, and the attached turreted gatehouse were built as an ornamental sham castle in the mid 18th century. It overlooks the site of the Civil War Battle of Edgehill. It was designed by Sanderson Millar as part of his Radway Grange estate. All sorts of ornamental buildings were put up to provide a feature in a planned landscape. Some are called follies and generally had no other purpose. Some were used as houses or even farm buildings but designed to look like a castle or more interesting building. The tower became a pub in 1822, when it was sold by a descendant of Sanderson Miller. It is still a pub in 2013 called the Castle Inn.
