Rock Art Drawing of a Bird, Creswell Crags, Derbyshire

This photograph shows a carving of a type of bird called an ibis. It was discovered by archaeologists surveying the inside of a cave. The cave is called Church Hole Cave and is part of the Creswell Crags network of caves and rock shelters. We don't know its exact age, but do know that it dates back to the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) and is more than 12,000 years old. At least 80 other carvings have been found here, they are some of the oldest in Britain and the most northern examples in Europe. Find out more about Church Hole Cave.
