Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, Merseyside
A view up Ranelagh Street looking towards Copperas Hill and the Adelphi Hotel. The original Lewis's Department store shown was destroyed by enemy bombs during World War Two. It was rebuilt on the same site but in a different style. Central station was originally a large, above ground, terminal station. It opened on 2 March 1874, at the end of the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) line to Manchester Central. This station was demolished in 1973. On 11 January 1892 Liverpool Central Low Level station opened. It stood at the end of the Mersey Railway's route, via the Mersey Railway Tunnel, from Birkenhead. There is still an underground Central station beneath this site. It is part of the current (2011) Merseyrail network serving the local area and is reached via an escalator.
