RAF East Kirkby, East Kirkby, Lincolnshire
View of workers pouring concrete over a fuel pipeline supplying RAF East Kirkby airfield. The base opened on 20 August 1943 as a Bomber Command Station. This suggests that this photograph shows the airfield being built, before the RAF moved in. It became the base for No.57 Squadron and No.630 Squadron of the RAF. The 603 Squadron was actually formed at East Kilby on the 15th November 1943 and remained based there throughout its existence. It's motto was "Nocturna mors" ("Death by night"). Both squadrons flew Lancaster Bombers from this base. This photograph comes from the John Laing Company Archive.
