Priory Mill, Barnsley, South Yorkshire

This mill has 13th century origins. It was heavily remodelled in 1635 by Sir William Armyne. The mill was powered by water brought by a leat (channel) from the River Dearne. A large stone drain led from the leat to the Monk Bretton Priory. Here it flushed the kitchen and reredorter (toilets) and then returned to the leat.
