Portrait of Charles Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London
This painting was titled "Charles Darwin" by the artist John Collier. The portrait shows Darwin as he looked in later life, aged around 72. It was painted in 1883, after his death, but is a copy of a portrait from 1881. This version was done with advice from Darwin’s sons on how to make it an even better likeness of him. He is wearing his cloak and gardening hat, perhaps as a reminder that he was ultimately an outdoor scientist who studied things first hand for himself. Darwin's home, Down House, is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
