Outer Gatehouse, Carlisle Castle, Carlisle, Cumbria

Interior view of the Outer Gatehouse showing a reconstruction of the kitchen fireplace. In 1378–83, the outer gatehouse, known as De Ireby’s Tower, was rebuilt by the famous mason John Lewyn to house a residence on its first floor, probably for the sheriff. This fireplace kitchen was part of that residence. King Henry I (reigned 1100–35) had visited Carlisle in 1122 and ordered that it be ‘fortified with a castle and towers’, which may represent the origin of the massive keep and earlier gatehouse. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
