Old Town Hall, 1-7 St Albans Row, Carlisle, Cumbria

This former town hall, with shops beneath, was built in 1668-9. It is on the site of the medieval town hall. It was altered in 1717 and again in the 19th century. It has the carved inscription "Joseph Parker, Esq, Mayor, MDCCXVII". The bell and bell-tower are replacements, from an early one that was destroyed by fire, they were rebuilt in 1886. The original contract for the Town Hall dated 1668 is in Cumbria County Record Office and an extract from the council minutes for 23 July 1669 shows that the work was carried out.
