New Road Waterworks, Barking, London

The workforce pose with shovels and picks beside a wooden tower at the New Road Waterworks in Dagenham. Polluted water from the Thames caused many outbreaks of disease, especially cholera. The Metropolitan water Act of 1852 tackled some of the problems of the water supply, but it took until the end of the century before the necessary changes were fully implemented.
