Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, Oaks Road, Charley, Leicestershire
Mount St Bernard Abbey is a Cistercian monastery. It was begun in 1839. It was designed by A W N Pugin. In 1844 the monks moved in. The Earl of Shrewsbury donated £2000 and Pugin provided his services for free. It is on land given by Ambrose Lisle March-Phillips de Lisle of Grace Dieu. It replaced a smaller monastery, now demolished, begun 1837 by William Railton on a nearby site. Much of the building work was done by members of the community. Since it was begun there have been many alterations and additions.
