Littleborough, Greater Manchester
The photographer, J M Prest, was interested in industrial buildings and domestic buildings with upper storey workshops. This pair of houses with upper storey workshops is on the Rochdale to Littleborough road. There would have been looms for weaving cloth in them. It is possible to tell that they were workshops from because there are far more windows than you would need if the top floor was just bedrooms. Workshops needed plenty of natural light, particularly before gas or electric lights were common.
