Limekiln, Dittisham Mill Creek, Cornworthy, Devon

This is one of two limekilns on the foreshore of this creek. The other one is shown in a water colour painting, dating 1792, by John White Abbott (1763-1851). Limestone and fuel was tipped into the top of the kilns and burned. The lime was taken out from the bottom. Lime was used in industrial products such as cement and in whitewash.
