King James' Gate, Burnaby Road, Portsmouth

The strategic position of Portsmouth and its vital importance for the defence of the Channel coast led to the development of a protective circuit of defences around the town. King James' Gate is dated 1687 and was originally positioned in Broad Street. It was taken down in around 1860 and re-built in its present position in the early 20th century. While built primarily for defensive purposes, this elegant town gate is also a symbol of civic pride, and is a rare survivor from this period.
