John Smiths Brewery, Tadcaster, North Yorkshire

This brewery complex was built in 1883 by the architects Scammell & Collier of Leeds. It cost £150,000. It is an excellent example of a large scale Victorian tower brewery. Tadcaster once had 4 breweries. Brewing on a large scale began in the 1880s. It flourished here because of the lime-rich spring water. It was excellent for making a light bitter (beer).
