HMP Everthorpe, Everthorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire

This shows the inside of the prison. It was originally built as as 'borstal' or young offenders prison in the 1950s. These prisons were intended to prevent younger criminals reoffending by offering education and training, not just punishment.

Themes

The village stocks with four ankle holes for the punishment of petty crime and misdemeanor in the village. Although probably used from the Anglo-Saxon period, a statute of 1351 made it law for every township to provide and maintain a set of stocks.
