Hat Department, Austin Reed, Birmingham, West Midlands

The interior of the shop showing the hat department. At this time men always wore hats in public. The hats on the table and right of the photograph are trilbys. On the middle shelves on the left there are some bowler hats. Most of the other hats appear to be 'straw boaters'. These were very fashionable and can be seen in many Edwardian photographs, generally worn by young men in the summer. There are no flat caps which were generally worn by working class men.
