Former Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum, Wanstead, Greater London
This former Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum and chapel opened in 1863. It was designed by George Somers Clarke in a Gothic style. The most striking features are the tower and spire and the porch with marble columns. The great hall was added in 1866. In 1919 it became The Convent of the Good Shepherd. In 1937 the buildings became Wanstead Hospital. It was proposed that a big new general hospital would be developed on the site but it never happened. The main hospital of 188 beds closed in 1986.
