East London Water Works, New Road, Barking, Greater London
Men working building a chamber or tunnel at the East London Water Works, Barking. The subject of this photograph is recorded as 'working on face' in the daybook of Bedford Lemere, the photographers who took the photographs. The technique would have been very similar to that used by coalminers who also worked 'at the face' when cutting coal. The man in the suit and bowler hat is probably supervising the 3 other workmen. He would have been called an overseer.
