Dole table in churchyard, Nynehead, Somerset

This dole table was made in the 16th or 17th century. Dole tables were where food or money was handed out to the poor. This was often to travellers passing through a town or village. In the Church Wardens Accounts from 1668 to 1685 there are many references to charitable giving. This is a rare survival of a churchyard dole table.
