Cullercoats Bay, Tyne and Wear
A view looking north across Cullercoats Bay. The boats drawn up on the beach were known as cobles. They were a type of open traditional fishing boat only found on the North East coast of England. They had a high bow (front) so that they could be used in rough seas. They had flat bottoms so they could be launched from the beaches around this coast. The things that look like trollies with large wheels, resting on the beach and on the quay above the beach, were used for wheeling the cobles down the beach and launching them into the water. The design of the coble could be based on Viking boats. Vikings settled along this coast.
