Council Housing, 27 & 29 Higher Bullen, Barwick, Somerset

These houses were built in 1925. They were built for the local council as low-cost houses. Their design is based on the principals that Lt Colonel Nissen, of the Royal Engineers, used in the construction of the World War One Nissen huts. The Nissen huts were built to house troops during the First World War. Because of its semicircular, corrugated iron shape the Nissen Hut could deflect shrapnel and bomb blasts. This made it a perfect bomb shelter.
