Blenheim Palace, Blenheim, Oxfordshire
Blenheim Palace is a large country house. It was built from 1706-1719 by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor for the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough in Woodstock park. The park was given by Queen Anne to the Duke as thanks for services to the country during the war with France. John Churchill was the 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650–1722). It was Queen Anne who had created the dukedom in 1702. His victories in the battles of Blenheim (1704), Ramillies (1706), Oudenarde (1708), and Malplaquet (1709), ensured his place in history as one of Europe's great generals. It was the home of Winston Churchill.
