Bell Hotel, Market Square, Winslow, Buckinghamshire
The exact date of this photograph is not known. Clothing and transport can often be used to work out a rough date. In this image it is mostly men whose clothes did not change as much as women's. The Norfolk jackets and Eton collars of the schoolboys were worn throughout this date range. The policeman and bicycles would suggest it is Edwardian rather than Victorian and maybe towards the end of the period. The Bell Hotel was once the venue for the Magistrates Court with Petty Sessions being held on alternative Wednesdays. Stage Coaches to and from London would call every day except Sunday. The building dates from the 17th century and was re-fronted in the early 1800s. The building to the left, with the hotel's carriage entrance, has kept its original features . This photograph was taken as part of the Victoria County History project.
