Ashes Farmhouse, Church Lane, Goosnargh, Lancashire

This farmhouse was built in the 1600s. It was then altered over later centuries. From the late 16th to mid 18th centuries it was the home of the recusant Threlfall family. A recusant was a Catholic who refused to attend the Protestant Church of England church services, at a time when it was illegal to be a Catholic. Edmund Threlfall, active in Lancashire Plot of 1689, was killed here in 1690. The Lancashire plots were attempts to overthrow the Protestant king William II and replace him with the Jacobite and Catholic James II.
