This photograph tricks the eye. It could be a man bending over a model village until you see the brick that he's laying. This emphasizes the dizzying height at which he is working. It highlights the different standards of health and safety that were in place in the past. The bricklayer is wearing no hard hat or safety harness. Attitudes to smoking were different too, its common to see it in the workplace during the 1940s and 1950s; the damage to people's health wasn't appreciated as it is now.
