The Deptford Survey was carried out by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, in co-operation with English Heritage and the London Borough of Lewisham. Professor Bernard Herman of the University of Delaware Centre for Historic Architecture in the USA, was also a partner in the project. The starting point for the project was a Conservation Area Partnership Scheme, affecting 11-31 Tanners Hill. This was followed by a rapid survey of the entire length of Deptford High Street, which was carried out by two graduate students, Colin Burgess and Neville Stankley, from Nottingham Trent University's Heritage Studies course, in April 1997. This rapid survey immediately led to more intensive recording at further sites, which is catalogued as EHC01/139.
There is extensive overlap between both projects, and material from both projects is cited in the 2004 publication 'The Small House in Eighteenth-Century London'.
