Series: Mayson Beeton Print Collection

Description

Topographical prints of London and the Home Counties from 1420 - 1930. The Collection was donated to the Ministry of Works in 1941 by Sir Mayson Beeton in the hope it would be the "nucleus for the purposes of reference, consultation and research". The collection is comprised of over 1000 volumes mainly on London topography, architecture and archaeology which are held by the NMR Library and a separate series of prints which includes views, elevations and social scenes of London. Sir Mayson was the son of Mrs Beeton.

The prints are filed topographically by location, title and date. A printed guide (available in the NMR Library) lists the headings used in identifying each print, eg Buckingham Palace, and the location of the print, 5H BUC, together with references to related material in other prints.

The majority of headings are qualified by a district, or suburb if outside central London, or a street name if within the inner London area: eg ALBANY, Piccadilly; FLASK INN, Kentish Town. Houses, areas or streets which are well known eg ST JAMES'S PALACE, are not qualified by the street name.

The location reference is that of Bartholomew's "Reference atlas of Greater London". Prints of the Banqueting House will be found under 6C BAN. BAN being the code for BANQUETING HOUSE. Further references to prints of the Banqueting House can be found under other location codes and these are listed both under the subject and title. Alternative names have also been noted with their corresponding location codes, and alternative references are cited in order of importance.

Items in the collection have three sizes (S, M and L) and this designation is recorded on a card index of the collection. The prints are stored alphabetically by these categories.
