Description
This landscape-based research project aims to provide new understanding of the historic environment of the Mendip Hills, exploring the variety of landscapes, archaeological sites and historic buildings that shape the character of this special place.
Various teams within English Heritage are involved in the project, including Archaeological Survey and Investigation, Architectural Investigation and Aerial Survey.
Mark Bowden, English Heritage Senior Investigator for the Archaeological Survey and Investigation section, heads the project team and chairs the Project Board that has been set up to guide and monitor progress. The Board includes representatives from the AONB Service, North Somerset Council, Somerset County Council, Bristol University and Worcester University. Other English Heritage staff involved are Elaine Jamieson, undertaking field investigation, Barry Jones undertaking historic buildings surveys, Simon Crutchley and Krystna Truscoe, working on aerial survey interpretation.
The first three years of the project will involve fieldwork and research, with the fourth year dedicated to writing and collating illustrations and graphics for the publication.
