From June – September 2023, Historic England and Emergency Exit Arts worked with residents in London, Lowestoft, Gloucester, Wigan, Gosport, Middlesbrough and Stalybridge to co-produce colourful street parades that reflected the history and heritage of each place, and celebrated what’s special about our high streets. These free events offered a unique blend of dance, music and performance, encouraging people of all ages to visit and engage with their high streets, and were the finale for Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zones Cultural Programme, a four year programme to revitalise more than 60 high streets. Visiting each location was a large puppet of a curious fox called Farrah who was welcomed by a large host puppet created in partnership with local residents through weeks of community workshops and activities. Each host puppet told a story of the location’s heritage, bringing it to life for residents and visitors alike. In Middlesbrough, Farrah was welcomed by host puppet Tia, inspired by South Asian communities in the City. During the event Farrah received musical gifts including a newly composed song, African drumming and choir of retirees, a patchwork sari made from over 10 metres of donated Saris was also on display in the City during the parade.
