Description
The collection comprises a printed book, published in 1865, with elaborate binding entitled 'Sheffield and its neighbourhood. Photographically illustrated by Theophilus Smith'. The book contains 16 black and white photographs, probably taken between 1860-1865, showing views of the city and surrounding areas. The book was printed by A.W. Bennett of Bishopsgate, London.
The photographs show: Hallamshire forgemen (photograph courtesy of Messrs. John Brown and Co.); High Street, Sheffield; interior of room in Carbrook Hall; Iris Office, Hartshead; the old 'Hawle at the Poands'; interior of the Shrewsbury Chancel, St Peter's Church; armour plate works etc. from Cricket Inn road; ruins of Manor Lodge, Beauchief Abbey, chimney-piece, Beauchief Hall, with effigy of Sir Nicholas Strelley; Ribbledene; 'Wolf Wheel' , on the Rivelin; Stanedge Pole, Stanedge Rocks; and old timbered Houses, Norton Lees. There are also 11 engraved vignettes.
The volume contains some of the earliest known images of Sheffield and its industries as well as sites outside the city.

Theophilus Smith was a designer, sculptor, author and photographer.
The book was purchased by the NMR in 2008.
